New Airbus design excites engine manufacturers and carbon traders

This new design of Airbus with 12 engines is exciting manufacturers. With so many engines each one will only have to do a fraction of the work. Producing such a great number of engines will be a challenge but there are efficiency savings to be made from the high volume and greater standardisation.

The body of the plane has been specially enlarged to carry a greater amount of fuel necessary to carry the same number of passengers. It is not known how it can be flown economically but their are rumours that Airlines who buy such a plane will be eligible to make large profits from trading the carbon credits they would receive by not flying it.

One use may be to clear runways and airports of snow by doing a flyby rather than having to go to the expense of buying expensive snow ploughs and having to have specially trained staff to drive them.

Spoof Airbus

On seeing the plane an American commentator said that the plane not be as stealthy or manoeuvrable as the F35 and would probably lose in a dogfight even against cheap European fighter planes because of the lack of thrust vectoring.

A spokesman for Boeing commented that Airbus was only able to build such a plane because of uncompetitive subsidies received by European companies. They are rumoured to soon release plans of a 14 engined plane which will be able to specialise for shorter flights between local hubs.

No news about Gordon Brown yet, but he made noises that he wanted to do Charity work, so expect to see him show up at IMF, UN, WWF, etc. He should have lots of banker friends after selling of most of UK’s gold at lowest possible price.

Engineers are Terror-ble?

Engineers are angry – Beware!

Are engineers statistically more likely to be terrorists than other disciplines (or rather terrorists are more likely to be engineers) . If that is explained by greater ability to do something once they decide (they don’t have to learn much new to make a bomb etc.). They have ability to learn how to fly a plane? Or if it can be explained by their disappointment with engineering/science.

As discussed here Slate / Build-a-Bomber and here Fred Borz/ Are engineers more likely to become terrorists a study (reported as an essay in new scientist) found that among muslims, engineers were 3-4 times more likely to become terrorists. Also 60% of `muslim terrorists’ born in the west had engineering backgrounds.

Actually it seems like the disappointment from thwarted expectations is what made these people angry.

Gambetta and Hertog propose that a lack of appropriate jobs in their home countries may have radicalized some engineers in Arab countries. The graduates they studied came of age at a time when a degree from a competitive technical program was supposed to provide a guarantee of high-status employment. But the promises of modernization and development were often stymied by repression and corruption, and many young engineers in the 1980s were left jobless and frustrated.

Regarding American domestic terrorists I am not sure the trend holds true…
The Unabomber is said to be a talented mathematician, more likely to target engineers then be one. Timothy McVeigh left the education system after high school.

Bainite Controversy

Some of my colleagues including one Professor have noticed that my Blog has been covering controversial topics, including religion (Church abuse, Vatican criticises about human rights ), politics (Liberal Double Speak, Burlesconi Scandal) , football (England have to qualify after losing bid to host World Cup). All of these are topics my uncle told me I should never discuss.

The reason is I am building up controversy before discussing about displacive and diffusional bainite 😉

Heat Effected Zone

This might be a good way to remember the difference between effect and affect.

HAZ is common abbreviation for the ‘Heat Affected Zone’, the volume of the base material altered by heat from welding process.

I decided if a ‘Heat Effected Zone’ exists it should be the new volume created by the welding process, i.e. the weld pool or fusion line.
